Antique Rocking Chairs
In olden days rocking chairs were stationary chairs with added rockers. After 1800s chairs built with rockers became popular. Antique rocking chairs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, like most common basic wooden creations in hardwood, gold leaf and ivory. These old rocking chairs are usually considered as finest example of American furniture design. Initially legs were notched to fix into rockers, as time passed chairs were beautifully designed and made specifically as Rocking chairs. Some old designs had chairs with heavy legs which were joined to rockers themselves. Soft seat cushions were added after sometime.
Rocking chairs are usually associated with country and backyards. Rocking chairs are usually placed in front porch or near fireplace. Some early rocking chairs were known as "Carpet cutters"; because carpets use to damage due to their constant rocking in the same place.
Boston rocker is one of the most popular forms of rocking chairs in mid 1800s. It was known for its characteristic rolled seat; front of the seat was curved inwards and rear part was curved upwards. These chairs have very beautiful decorations on chair back and armrests in gold paint.
Common type of antique rocking chair is Windsor Rocking chair. Windsor rocking chair was very popular in rural parts of England these chairs are often referred as garden chairs. Windsor rocking chairs have spindles running down their back and armrests. Chairs legs are fitted into rockers. In eighteenth century these chairs became one of the most important chairs. Birthplace of American Windsor rocking chairs is Philadelphia.
Bentwood rocking chairs is another style of antique rocking chairs. It was manufactured by Thonet Brothers from Vienna in mid 1800s. This rocking chair was created by bending soft beech wood. Original Bentwood Rocking chairs are very expensive and these designs are widely copied.
Around World War I, Wicker Rocking chairs was produced. These chairs were made of machine twisted paper reeds; these reeds are called as Wicker reeds. These chairs are well known for their woven designs.
