Elm: Most commonly used for Rocking chairs. It is hard and durable. It is easy to polosh wood with very attractive grain.
While choosing antique rocking chair see to that chair is really antique means it is at least hundred years old. Anything else is vintage or Collectible. Here are some things that you need to pay attention to:
Get closer look of rocking chair under bright light. Get a good look at all sides including rocker's bottom.
Test solidity of chair. Sit on chair push your weight to and fro, if chair wobbles it is loose and need some repairing
Authentic antique chair will have dirt in crevices and places which are hard to clean. If this is absent then piece is not old or it is refinished.
Chair should have uniform color; some variations due to exposure to atmospheric conditions can be taken in consideration. Avoid buying antique rocking chairs with burn marks.
Make sure that no part is missing and get second opinion from some knowledgeable person before buying very expensive Antique wooden rocking chair.
