Architectural Models

An architectural model is a concrete representation of a structure (scale model)built to convey design ideas to clients, owners, committees, customers and in the general public. It can be used for public relation purposes, like to obtain permits and for larger projects. Common materials used for these models comprise of card stock, basswood, plastic, other woods, balsa wood and paper. A number of companies produce ready-made pieces for structural components like girders, beams, siding, vehicles, furniture, people etc which are found in the models. Rapid prototyping and solid freeform fabrication (3D printing) are tools that automatically construct models straight from CAD plans. Scales like 1:160 and 1:187 are used for in constructing models of vehicles, railroads, trees, figures etc. Models can be built at a larger scale approximately of 1:150. This scale is especially used for architectural models of houses. Professional model-makers are employed in the construction of the architectural models.

Various softwares have been designed to plan architectural models. A software architectural model is a rich and meticulous diagram created using available principles whereby the primary object is to highlight the specific set of tradeoffs intrinsic in the structure and the design of a system or an ecosystem. The aim of the software architectural model is to give proper details about the given theme. The information should not be ambiguous. It the responsibility of the software to ensure that the architectural model looks like a miniature of the actual model. It should be made rigorously and meticulously. The software should use a set protocol and should incorporate standards of design. UML is the most used standard. It should illustrate the model in a way that it generates an opinion and viewpoint amongst the audience. The architectural design should come up with a plan in a way that elements of the model should co-ordinate with each other.

Various websites offer online products for software architectural models. Online design workshops and books are made available for reference. Even a person without formal training of architectural models can construct his own models with the aid of the online programs. Many professional model makers can be consulted online. Online software architectural packages sometimes prove more feasible than actually consulting and hiring the services of a professional model-maker.
