Most people shudder at the mention of the name worms but rarely do they understand that the worms are the best natural recycling machines of nature. Today's world is full of inorganic materials and the problem of garbage in the great cities of the world has crossed the limits. Garbage bins overflow in most of the modern cities of the world. The reliance on pesticides and poisonous chemical fertilizers has destroyed much of the earth's pristine environment. Heavy industrialization, urbanization are the leading causes of the fast deterioration of the earth's environment. The threat of global warming looms large over the earth and the way out of this is to have many worm breeding farms. Worms in the soil help to keep it properly aerated. Worm castings produced by the worms is rich in the micronutrients that the soil needs. The worms in the soil play a vital role in keeping it fertile and help the crops for a better harvest not much in terms of productivity but with respect to the quality of the yield.

The role of worms in the environment

The role of the neglected worms in the environment is multi-dimensional. Worms help in better mixing and aeration of the soil. They also help in better penetration of water in the soil. The soil texture improves by the activity of the worms. The use of chemical fertilizers makes the soil saline and increase the 'ph' count of the soil. However, the worms set the 'ph' level of the soil to a moderate degree. Worms also bring in minerals in the soil. The action of the microbes also increases in the soil. The worms convert garbage in compost manure, which is ideal for organic farming thereby yielding harvest that is free from harmful chemicals. The worm castings are the most environment friendly fertilizers that man can use.

The usefulness of worms in recycling

Worms are the best recycling options that can be used to convert garbage to good quality manure. Worms not only produce castings but they also produce what is known as leachate which is also very valuable. The cost effectiveness of having the worm breeding farms is another great advantage of the breeding farms. Thus the worms help in many ways to protect the environment.
