Barn Renovation

While planning for a barn renovation, there are certain important things to be considered. One of the greatest challenges in renovating a barn is using the available space upto its maximum. A lot of space is available and two things are to be considered when using it. Firstly, building it like a conventional house within the area of the barn and secondly, keeping the barn as a barn only. Any barn renovation considers these two approaches, and finally finds out a middle way combining both the options.

I. A House within a Barn: The height of the barn is generally quite high for adding up an additional floor within the barn. Thus converting the size of 150 square meters of the barn into approximately 300 square meters, that is usually enough for us. You can decorate the room upstairs by decorative ceilings and lots of wooden work.

II. A Barn within a Barn: In this type, emphasis is given on keeping the entire height of the barn visible for giving a cathedral type of kitchen and the lounge. The bedrooms are made by dividing the downstairs into several boxes. Such type of barn is not easy to decorate and it also spoils your interiors. At the same time, you do not get the additional 150 square meters space upstairs by keeping it upto its full height.

III. The Middle Way: This also has two alternatives:

In the first option, bedrooms make up for half of the downstairs area. The lounge is constructed above these bedrooms and the kitchen area below is left open that occupies the second half downstairs. Thus, at the entrance of the barn you can visualize the entire space and height of the barn.

The second option is building walls all around the barn by cutting about 1/3rd of the area available. In this part will be occupied the bathrooms and the bedrooms, upstairs as well as downstairs. You can also have a balcony upstairs for seeing the open interior space available. Some space downstairs can be reserved for a lounge providing comfort to watch T.V. without disturbing the peace of the entire barn.
