If your bathroom is in a shade of blue – or you are planning to redecorate it that way – why not revitalise it and take to the high seas with some nautical bathroom decor?

Blue can seem cold in a room, so choose your shade wisely. Keep it pale and light. Think of the blue sky you enjoy on a summer's day and you'll be on the right lines.

Instead of using a plastic bath panel that matches the colour of your bathroom suite, clad the side of it with vertical wooden planks. And here's a tip – paint them with exterior white paint instead of bathroom paint. Not only is it waterproof, it will repel mould and keep water out of the wood far more easily.

You can continue this bathroom decor idea by panelling the bottom half of each wall as well as the bath.

Adding Accessories

Nautical bathroom decor is widely available. Shop around before you buy and see what kind of style you like.

You may want your bathroom decor to be peaceful and calming. Simple boat designs and wave patterns can help to achieve this effect. If you'd prefer a fun and more upbeat theme, look for accessories with cartoon style fish designs.

Nautical bathroom decor can also be found on holiday. The next time you visit the beach, visit the local shops and buy some different shells to use in your bathroom. They can look very attractive piled on a windowsill or shelf. If the shelf is very narrow, try sticking each one down with a tiny spot of Blu-tack.

Beachfront shops are also ideal places to buy model fishing boats. These are usually very cheap and available in a variety of colours and sizes to match your bathroom decor, and suit the amount of space you have available.

Child Friendly

If you have children it's important to keep any ornaments out of reach. This is especially true for shells, as they are small and can be easily swallowed. If you are in doubt about any item you plan to use, it's probably wise to save it until they are a little older.

From fishing boats to shells, and cartoon fish to blue whales, there is a wealth of possibilities available to you when you go for a nautical theme to your bathroom decor.

The advantage of having a nautical themed bathroom is that you can either keep it simple and have just a few accessories which fit the theme, or repaint the whole room to look like a beach hut.

The choice is yours.
