A carport is an open sided shelter for a car projecting from the side of a house. A porch or a carport can also add to the signature of a building. In many houses the carport may be attached to the main building through a verandah. The carports are very useful and are an attractive feature of your house.

One should keep in mind the size, proportion and height while planning a carport. While building a carport one should also consider the number and type of vehicles you will use it for so that the proportion may be calculated accordingly.

In many instances you find the carport size and the main building size is not proportionate to each other creating an imbalance in the design. It is advantageous to have the carport next to the house, close to the verandah so that space used up as driveway is limited so that more open space could be converted to a garden or play area for children.

As far as possible refrain from having the carport close to bedrooms because it will disturb the members of the family. An important factor to be kept in mind is the flooring of the carport. Keeping with the aesthetics of the main house use natural material as it ensures easy cleaning.

Being the first area one notices upon arrival it is imperative that it is kept clean so that it sets a welcoming mood to the visitor and a matter of pride for the owner of the house. If the carport is designed in such a way that it appeals to the eye and also shares the character of the main house you can be sure that you can experience the warmth of your home at the entrance itself.

There are carports which serve as impromptu entertainment areas especially in your get away home in the hills. Guests may be entertained around a campfire in the carport rather than suffer the chill in the open. Therefore a carport is also an essential part of your home needing a good deal of attention while planning your home.
