Worm farming is an environment-friendly technique as it is increasingly being used for recycling biodegradable waste. The worms present beneath the soil fertilize it and increase the agriculture efficiency. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides often worsen the soil rather than improving it. Along with destroying the harmful organisms, the pesticides also destroy the beneficial organisms in the soil. So, having a worming breeding plan is a better way of conserving the soil fertility naturally. Worm farming turns vegetable and fruit wastages into great natural soil resources required and soil products for the garden and house plants. It can be done on long term basis. It is useful when space for a backyard compost bin is not available. It is a method of recycling the food wastage into a rich, dark, earth-smelling soil conditioner. It can be done indoors or outdoors. It is also known as worm composting and vermicomposting. It does not generate heat and preserve all the nutrients for reuse. Vermiculture is a method of breeding, raising, selling worms and worm related products.

Starting the worm breeding farm business

1. Get the information about the availability of the variety of worms from television shows, books and magazines. Learn more about industry.

2. Visit worm farmers and get the information on beds, equipment, hygiene and diseases. Also check the yellow pages.

3. Get suggestions from retail outlets in nurseries and hardware stores. Take a glance at the product and pricing. Get an explanation about the product and the future market from the shop staff.

4. Set up a small business plan. Visit and take advice from the local business enterprise centers to get the right direction.

5. Make a detailed, disciplined and logical plan that should include scale, time limit, locality, required resources, market and castings, product lines and customers, capita, running cost and income, registration, license and business approvals.

6. Decide type of worms. Tiger worm, a kind of earthworm is rich in high quality organic substances. Red Wriggler can inhabit the soil in extreme cold conditions. Blue worm is a tropical earthworm and can tolerate any condition.

More on business plan

Operating scale depends on many factors. Small scale business requires small capital, lowering the risk. Commercial scale requires some investment in land, buildings and equipment. Get a source of adequate supply of organic materials. Get plenty of information about the market to sell the products.

Worm Breeding Farms

Worm farms are very simple creatures and one can make them easily. Worms fertilize and aerate the soil. It is advantageous in growing worms as they save the environment by decreasing the organic waste and decrease stress. They will in turn help in growing a beautiful garden. So, proving a shelter to these worms is a must. Worms are wonderful and they survive only to eat compost, excrete worm castings and reproduce themselves in hundreds and thousands. Worms enjoy the waste and scraps available. Worms like the fruit and vegetable scraps and peelings, egg shells, all the garden waste and the leaves and animal droppings.

Worm breeding farms and environment

The invisible earthworms usually very quietly aerate, till and fertilize the soil from a long time in the farms. Worms are truly our partner to fight to save the environment. Worm breeding farms must have a cool, dark, moist environment. Worms should not be exposed to a prolonged light or allow them to dehydrate. The worm farms should not become too wet as the worms can drown. Protect the farms from rain water entering into the farms. The most common method is by building beds 1 to 2 meters wide of any convenient length. The bed is a rectangular space enclosed by bricks, cement blocks or any material that can be used to enclose the space. The food supplied to the worms should be totally or partially decomposed organic matter.

The high temperatures generated could kill the worms. Composting is a fermentation process carried out in different ways according to the material used. A mixture of horse and cow dung is used for the fermentation process. Other organic materials such as the grass, leaves, paper, cartons, peelings and wood can also be used.

During this process the high temperatures will destroy the pathogenic germs. These are suitable for the worms to eat. The worms must be fed periodically. In the right kind of environment the worms will double in number in every 2 or 3 months. If the population increases you can start another farm and transfer the extra worms.

In the right kind of environment and circumstances compost worms can live happily in the compost bins. The temperature should not be too high. Always leave a decent quantity of castings in the worm farm as the worms require a bedding material for breeding. The worm droppings that are an extract from the remains of the organic material are useful and make a nutrient rich, ph neutral garden fertilizer.

Worm breeding farm is the easiest and the most efficient way to make the land more fertile. It can be carried out at a small scale like worm breeding at gardens or the small backyards. The only requirement for the garden wise worm breeding farm is to collect thousand of worms, preparing the breeding bins and kitchen wastes.

Requirements/Preparations:

There are many types of suitable containers for keeping worms. A simple polystyrene or wooden box from the fruit shop can serve the purpose. The container must contain holes in it for air flow and drainage purpose. One must have around 2000 compost worms which substantially multiply to 8000 worms within 6 months. A bucketful of bedding material which contains partly decomposed compost, straw or leaf mould is required to fill the container.

Method:

First of all, choose a shady spot in the garden with good drainage. Line the containers in the garden with a few sheets of dampened newspaper. Now, half fill the container with bedding mix which could be comprised of compost, grass clippings and shredded paper. The bedding mix must not be as fresh as the main food course. The best material for well-rotted compost is use of compost product from garden waste. Add the compost worms in the container and water till it becomes moist.

Keep adding the fruit and vegetable scraps each week starting with a small amount and gradually increasing the contents. After feeding the worms, cover the food scraps to avoid attracting vinegar flies. One must take care that the worm farm never gets dry since worms may die in dry atmosphere. Additional water should be added in hot and windy days and sustain the worm farm moist.

It may be necessary to start another worm farm after a period of six months. This can be done by repeating the process once again or by adding the on the top of the first. If the latter case is implied, then we have to keep adding the food scraps in the top box. The top box must have holes in it so as to help migration of worms. Around 10,000 worms can eat about 10kg of food waste each week, if kept in a worm farm of one meter square surface area.

Acme worm breeding farm is one of the most popular vermiculture company or rather a farm in the world. The company specializes in producing Eugenia fetida, more commonly known as red wrigglers. Eisenia fetida are the most valuable species of earthworms for composting purposes. These red wrigglers are very productive. They boom at high population densities and have very big appetites. Acme worm produce the best quality of these worms. Vermicomposting, better known as worm composting, is the final phase where the composting process ends. That is the point where the compost is converted into dirt. This dirt is ruled by soil micro organisms as they oppose the compost micro organisms. Ordinarily, compost requires to be digested by the soil ahead of giving its full results, while the castings derived from the worms are as ready to use as one can possibly get in a composting system.

Products:

The acme farm also produces nightcrawlers. The European nightcrawlers is increasingly becoming the ideal bait and live food worm. The European nightcrawlers are known as the toughest and the most vigorous worms available in today's market. They are the only kind of earthworms that can be used in the salt water successfully. Amazingly, the nightcrawlers have been used for ice fishing in the frosty waters of Northwestern British Columbia and were alive after being on the hook for 30 minutes. The European nightcrawlers are also very good bait for turtles, birds, reptilians, exotic pets and aquarium fish. They can be fed with just like the other normal earthworm. The company sells compost worms at a very reasonable price.

Other products:

The acme company has its own number of products. The other products include worm bins. Worm bins can be used for breeding worms in an indoor as well as an outdoor area. The bins have three layers that allow continuous air flow, thus encouraging proper aerobic conditions for rapid and odor free Vermicomposting. The bins range from $139 to $600 and can be ordered from the official acme website. Compost tea brewers are another product from the acme farm. Compost tea is the most economical way of using worm casting. Compost teas made by using worm castings, increase aeration and soil fertility to a great extent. They also provide a large scale of defense from plant diseases.

In order to start a worm breeding farm one should select a place which is best suited for the purpose of the breeding of the worms. The breeding of the worms are settled in a close container with holes. The fruits are then dumped in this and include some of the house wastes which can be decomposed. The decomposition then helps for the growth of the worms and they breed themselves for the production of the new ones. The increase in the number of the breeding process doubles the number of the worms. The worm castings help enhance fertilization. This is also considered to be the simplest way to carry on this process as they help in fertilizing for the gardens. The worm farm is ideal for the people living in those houses or flats where the environment suits the very basic stage of initializing the worm breeding. The worm castings play a greater role in the gardening activity.

Casting for the gardening process

The use of the worm growing process helps in the gardening. The gardening procedure is then continued by collecting the established worms and then the castings are removed. The involvement of the gardening process deals with the process of the potting plants which is a way to carry out commercial potting. The most important part of this process is to timely feed the worms by which they tend to live longer. The life of the worms and their health is dependent on the food that is being given to them. When the distribution of the food items gives them the addition qualities for the growth of the worms then they keep the good fertilizing qualities and thus they help in gardening.

The inclusion of the breeding on the basis of the increase in the number of the worms tends to make them a good fertilizing agent. The growth of the worms gives them a basis to support the purpose of the analyzing of the breeding process. The break in the support of the worms may not have insufficiency of the quality in the production of the plant but they just make the process faster for the initializing of the fertilizing.

Worms and different types of Worms

The night crawlers, red worms, European Night crawlers are some of the different kind of worms that are available for fishing baits, breeding stock or composing. Earthworms as they move through and burrow the soil they swallow great quantity of organic matter and digest this. After digesting the organic matter it then expels the residue in the form of the worm castings. These worm castings are rich in nitrogen, phosphates, calcium and magnesium. The red worms are great for pan fish such as bream or perch.

Vermiculture

Vermiculture is breeding worms and the demand for the red worms is increasing. The tiny red worm and the species known as the Eisenia fetida are strong in waste reduction. Raising earthworms and breeding earthworms for sale is time consuming and also requires hard work. Worms are raised and handled differently. There are two types of earth worm businesses and they are known as vermiculture and vermicomosing. In vermiculture one needs to concentrate on health, growth rate and reproductive rate of the worms.

Advantages of Worm Breeding

Earthworms are minute creature and they make the topsoil fertile. They are known as the topsoil factories. Earthworm castings are very rich in all the minerals that are necessary for the plant growth. Earthworm castings are rich in all the minerals that are necessary for the plant growth. It has been proven that earthworms have increased the productivity of many soils. Adding more worms than the soil can carry or adding worms to the soil deficient in organic matter will result in fertility resulting in the nutrients released from the dead worms.

Different worms for worm breeding

There are different species of earthworms like Tubificidae, the Phreodrilidae, the Enchytraeidae, the Megascolecidae and the Lumbriculidae. The families Tubificidae are the group of worms that live in the mud and which feed on the organic matter that is trapped in the mud. They are known as the tubifex worms. The family Enchytraeidae are the smaller worms. They are usually found in the well watered gardens with plenty of organic matter. Some other species include the Enchytraeus albidus, which is the worm used for the food for fishes. The family Lumbriculidae comprises of mostly the larger worms and they look like small earthworms. The lumbriculidae terrestris are found in the chalky soils and the L. rubella's and L. castaneus are most common in loam. Some of the species such as the Eisenia foetida will burrow deeper down the soil. The Megascolecidae is a large family and the worms are often larger in size.

Worms are the best recyclers

Worms are nature's best recycling machines and they are very cost effective. The usefulness of worms in waste management is tremendous and today stands as the best option for many governments all over the world. There are more advantages in having vermiculture than wasting money and time in costly recycling technology. Worms are the best friends of soil because the worms make the soil porous, there is better drainage of water and water can have better permeation in the soil. The worms in vermiculture disintegrate the waste that is fed to them into manure that is high in nutrients for the soil. The manure produced in vermiculture is high in nitrogen, which is essential for the growth of crops. The unique thing about vermiculture is its eco-friendliness. The worms in vermiculture are fed on garbage waste and thus there remains no need to dispose off the garbage waste. The introduction of worms in a garden that has had the use of chemical fertilizers restores the original texture of the soil. The other advantage of vermiculture is that if one is fond of fishing the worms can be used as baits. Baits are always in demand and one has to buy them. Having a vermiculture farm generates worms for baits and one does not have to spend extra on buying baits and thus there is saving.

Zero investment for feeding the worms

The worms feed on left over food and thus there is no need for the garbage to go in the land fills. Reduced garbage means the reduced population of rodents that are a nuisance. If the individual has his or her own garden, the vermicompost can be used for the plants of the garden. The compost produced in vermiculture is very rich for the plants. The vermiculture can be set in the balcony of an apartment as well and one can create a beautiful garden in one's apartment. Vermiculture, thus, can be done indoors as well outdoors. Many new companies are now venturing in the vermiculture industry and the production of vermiculture manure is undertaken on a large scale. The major advantage of vermiculture is that it is easy to set up as far as its small scale set up is considered. The material used to feed the worms for producing compost is easily available and is free of cost. Vermiculture also contributes in keeping the environment clean and unpolluted.

Use of worm farms

The waste sent to a landfill pollutes the ground water and gives rise to greenhouse gases. By having a worm farm, this waste can be reduced and an effective fertilizer can be created that can be used in the garden. Worm farming is a superior method to utilize garden waste, kitchen scrap and other scraps like paper and cardboard. These worm farms are easy to operate and comparatively cheap. Ordering worms and worm farms is very easy as it can be done online. Compost worms are different than common garden worms. Garden worms are not compatible for worm farms and live at a deep level. The different types of compost worms are Tiger Worms, Indian Blues and Red Wrigglers. All these types are identical in appearance. They have similar requirements and co-exist amicably.

Environment for worms

The worms prosper when present in a dark, moist and cool ambience. It is not recommended to expose them to light for a long time or dehydrate them or handle them excessively. When the worm farm is set, a light spray of water must be sprinkled. The food scraps would supply the required amount of moisture in the future. If the worm farm is allowed to become too wet, then the worms would drown in the water. It is necessary to save the worm farm from rain. It is advised to spray water from sprinklers. When the environment in the worm farm is suitable, the worms would become twice in two or three months. It may happen that the number of worms in the worm farm becomes a very large number. In that case, these worms must be transferred to another farm or to a compost heap.

Effect of Conditions on worms

The compost worms like the leafy surface layers. So, it must be ascertained that the amount of organic layer is in abundance. This provides the worms with safety from light and prevents their drying out. These worms can live satisfactorily in compost bins, provided the temperature in the bin is not high. As these worms are always very hungry, they eat scraps equal to half of their body weight each day. They do not possess teeth, so the scraps ought to be cut down into very small pieces.

The artificial cultivation of worms is called vermiculture. Vermiculture is the primary way that is used for the cultivation of the vermicompost. Vermiculture can change the organic waste into organic fertilizer. They utilize organic waste as their food. Theses waste foods are converted to fertilizers. A particular type of earthworms is used for manufacturing vermiculture. It is the process of earthworm culture through compost food like kitchen waste, grass and dry leaves manure. It is cultivated in container or tin can, a small wooden box, compost mound or a particular designed culture bed. At last add a few egg capsules or worms and shelter. Vermicompost is the special type of earthworm made out of humus. They eat cow dung beside other waste and pass it from their body. During this process it is transferred it into vermicompost.

Popularity of vermiculture:

Rising statistics of industry worldwide are effectively using vermiculture technology and marketing vermicompost as an outstanding soil fertilizer to farmers and gardeners. Basically earthworms act as natural reactors. This method of natural fertilizers, permits safe removal of few organic wastes and decreases the necessity of land fill. Vermicompost can be cultivated all year. To enhance effectiveness, care must be taken to make sure that natural feedstock and circumstances that permit worm's production effectively prevail. Vermicompost is normally odorless, hygienic, organic substance containing sufficient quantities of several micronutrients that is essential for plant to grow. Vermicompost is an ideal nutrient basis for organic farming.

Bins of vermiculture:

Vermicompost bins vary drastically depending on the desired size of the system. Garden-scale containers can be made out of bricks arranged in the shape of a box. Bins for an apartment or similar dwelling can be anything from reused plastic buckets to purpose-built commercial containers. Incase of small scale vermiculture a variety of bins can be used. Few companies let out such bins. The majority of the large-scale vermiculture systems do not include a physical bin, since it is unreasonable. A large organization generally uses a windrow that is made of bedding materials for the earthworms to live in and acts as a large bin. Organic material is added to the bins.

Worms are earthly creatures that have very thin physical structure. They are found under the earth's surface. They live in the interiors of the earth and without the soil they may not stay longer. The human beings can also take steps for creating such. Even most of the people have tried this at their home by using some of the required items which are found lying at the house premises. So, it can be concluded that one can initialize the breeding of the worms in their homes itself. The worm farms create some of the special worms, which are named as the compost worms. There are a lot of other examples of worms like tiger worms, Red Wrigglers and Indian Blues. Their diet on a particular day is considered to be half of their body weight. Thus they are fed according to their physical structure. When they get crowded they multiply themselves and breed consequently.

Process of breeding

It is not necessary for any person to go in for some special process of the breeding. The breeding undergoes in its natural process when whole arrangement for the farm is completed for the worms. Get a container from the polystyrene or else use the wooden boxes which are available with the holes at the end. In short period of time one may notice the number of worms to get doubled. A material known to be the bedding material is a mixture of the decomposed compost, straw, grass pieces and shredded papers and leaves. One can dump the house wastes and scraps which will help them to enhance the quality of the decomposition. Thus they help in the production of the worms.

The process of breeding at ones' home may be helpful for the production of these creatures. The population increases continuously every year making a faster growth rate. They are mainly called the hermaphrodites where the female and the male sex organs get combined to form the basis of the process of reproduction which gives rise to a number of new ones. The breeding process is fulfilled by these small processes.
