Dry Garden

Dry garden is the concept of the garden where there is scarcity of water. But still gardening is the easy. To make the gardening easy in the dry areas the method used is Xeriscaping. Xeriscape is the piece of land that uses low water requirement plants and making them able to stand in the long period of drought. This is the attempt to develop environment friendly planting.

In general foundation planting needs huge amount of water to stand by. But this will not work in the dry area. In the case of dry gardening we have to change the normal way. In this area we have to select the plant which is drought resistant. Generally planting is the occasion of contact between the seed and the soil which is well adequate with water. But dry gardening should not start without appropriate planning, plant selection, and placement.

There are number of plants and grasses which can stand by in the dry garden. These are like Buffalo grass, Acer negundo, Acer ginnala. We have to make clear that drought tolerance is not just genetic capabilities. Among all the spices many of them, if watered regularly and suddenly stopped will not consider as the drought resistant.

Another thing is that, previously water stressed plants will bear less drought than plants which are not previously stressed plants. Hence analyzing it one should freeze there transplantation to the landscape to get the better survival this can be done by decreasing the water frequency and increasing exposure of sun.

The next thing to consider is the necessity of mulching. This mulching is helpful in conservation of water. For this there is a huge verity of products.

1 The organic mulching includes peat moss, manure, leaf mold, compost as well as sawdust. These all are helpful in maintaining moisture level. Along with this they do provide nutrients, changing chemistry, physical structure of soil. Because of microbial breakdown it should add regularly.

2 Another type of mulching is inorganic. This contains plastic sheeting these generally do not get affected by the microbial actions.

In general, mulches work good on vegetables and flowers plants, but are actually harmful for native plants.
