Vermicomposting is the type of composting, which use worms to eat the fruit and vegetable scraps. Worm composting is adapted vastly than other composting methods. It can be done indoors or outdoors both. Worms creates castings that can be the best for the soil and enhance the growth of flowers and vegetables. Worms are the basic feeder. Instead one can set up a worm farm in a plastic bucket. It must have holes in the base of the container to allow excess water to run off.

Basic layout:

Initiate with a bedding layer of wet straw, shredded paper, leaf mould or a combination of all of them. Horse or cow manure can be the better option when wetted down. The use of poultry manure, which can be mixed with large quantities of straw, paper, grass clippings or peat moss can be a good option for making breeding farm. Now keep the worms in the bedding material. Leave the mixture in the castings or compost mixture they came in.

Insert extra bedding materials but put them in rotating layers parallel to a manure heap.

Next step is to wet the farm and cover with a small piece newspaper. The use of Eisenia fetida can increase the growth in the garden by decreasing the organic waste. Purchase proper worms from worm farmers. For starting one only needs a small number of worms. These worms breed and multiply quickly. Therefore it is a matter of months before starting with an ample supply.

How to maintain worm farm:

1. The worms should be provided with proper food. It is not required to feed the worm every time. Put in kitchen scraps when obtainable as food to the worm. Make the farm better to have space for more wastes. Try avoiding the use of large quantities of green uncomposted organic material. It can produce lot of heat as it breaks down.

2. Keep in mind to keep the farm damp and not wet.

3. The temperature can not be too much hot or too cold.

4. The best possible range of temperature is twenty two to twenty five degrees.

5. It is advised to use less pesticide in or around the farm.
