You may use stonework around the fireplace for matching the walls in your house. After some years the stones start foraging and needs to be renovated. You can use sand and cement mortar and pack the stones against the blocks retaining the walls. Leave some small gaps without applying cement on the stone face for sand and lime pointing afterwards. This may a long time to complete. Point the stonework using a mixture of sand and lime in the ratio of 5:2. Brush away the excess after the mixture dries.

Then install the wood burning insert to connect the hot air feed and the flue. You can have a heating box above the fire box for generating large volumes of the hot air. There are 2 outlets on the top of the fire. One outlet is packed while the other is ducted to release hot air round the house. Place a fan for blowing away the excess hot air and frequently, try to close the outlets in the upward directions as they may get too hot. In order to hide the pipework, you can use a piece of galvanized metal sheet folding around the top of the insert. You can now spray paint on it to add to its beauty.

The fireplace renovation is almost complete. You can spray the hood with a matt black heat resistant paint. Some stonework near and around the fireplace may require some cleaning and re-pointing. Clean the thoroughly with a solution of soap and water and allow it to dry. At last, you can add a brass strip between the fire insert and the hood.

For cleaning the stonework fireplace while renovating it, you can wirebrush it either by hand or by using an angle grinder having a wire brush attachment. It is very effective on the stones. There is naturally going to be some heat and stains of smoke because it is a fireplace that alters the overall appearance of the stone. Also washing them lightly with an acid restores the stone after removing the plaster mechanically. You can use a lime mix or some other product for doing the necessary pointing.
