Fluorescent Lights

Among the different types of lights that are in use for the fluorescent lights are the common ones for the household applications. They provide fluorescent white colored light. Moreover, they have better efficiency i.e. the emission of light per watt consumption of electrical energy. Therefore, they have become so popular for the simple applications as for the indoor use etc.

The fluorescent lights use the mechanism of the discharge of light by a gas. For this in these lights, the electricity excites the mercury vapor that is present along with an inert gas as argon or neon. This constitution of mercury and the inert gases together is known as the plasma. When the electricity excites this plasma, it emits high energetic ultraviolet light.

In addition to the plasma, also phosphor is present in the lamps. When the ultraviolet rays encounter the phosphor, it undergoes fluorescence. Thus, it produces the visible white colored light that the lamps emit.

In these lamps, there is a necessity of ballast for regulation of the current in the lamps. Therefore, in the common tube lights the fixtures have the ballast fixed in them. Therefore, for these types we require to use the fixtures.

While the smaller ones i.e. the compact fluorescent lamps the ballast is present in the bottom of the lamps itself. Therefore, we can directly use them through the holders for the incandescent lamps.

The fluorescent lamps are more efficient in providing higher emission of light per watt. In addition to this, they have a longer life than the incandescent lamps. Therefore, even if they are more costly than the incandescent lamps you can using them will save your money because of longer durability and lower consumption of power. The white light that they provide is more comfortable for the eyes as it facilitates better vision.

As they can provide light in greater amount and therefore they can be used for the lighting of the bigger halls. They are not much costly and therefore most the people can afford them.
