Garden Tea Party And Verandah
As per the dictionary, Verandah is the covered entrance along the exterior of a shop or a house. It can also be termed as big gallery or terrace on the same plane as the ground floor. It is said to have originated from two native Indian languages, Hindi and Bengali, baranda, but in reality is just an altered copy of Portuguese and older Spanish veranda which is a balustrade or balcony.
In the Oxford English Dictionary, the second meaning of Verandah is a covering built at the side of the building, particularly one built over the street outside the trading site found particularly in Australia and New Zealand.
There is yet another meaning to this word in the dictionary, it is, an open porch extending in the front and the sides of a building, giving protection against the sun and the rain. The decisive origin of this word is most probably European or maybe Latin meaning barra-, which means barrier. Thus the word verandah also means the place where a building comes in contact with mother earth.
The concept of a verandah is a universal one, it is not restricted to one nation, it is found in all the countries. English homes are very famous for their verandahs or porches. A verandah normally overlooks a garden or a lawn and so is naturally associated with all the happenings that take place on the lawn.
A garden tea party is undoubtedly the most regal tea party, which is taken very seriously even today. There are proper rules and etiquette that are followed. The origins of a tea party can be traced to the Elizabethan period in England.
The Verandah and garden go hand in hand, so when fashionable ladies, all dressed in their Sunday bests come to attend a tea party on a warm summer afternoon the verandah is naturally a part of the venue. The verandah is elaborately done up with fresh flowers, while the chairs are placed aesthetically. The menu is planned well in advance, games, if any are also planned well in advance. The hostess can dress up in a short floral printed dress for a summer party. Thus a verandah adds so much more charm to regular tea party.
