Gardening On Verandahs
The verandah is usually an extension which can be either in the front, back or all around the facade of a building. Over the years the functions of a verandah have changed.
Verandahs are usually roofed or partly covered areas. Mainly the verandah provides a comfortable space to relax before entering the home or to spend a few minutes before leaving the home. After a hard day's work a refreshing cup of tea on the verandah is something to look forward to.
Many prefer to have their morning coffee or breakfast on the verandah planning the day ahead. The furniture and design of the verandah helps create an ambience of leisure and soothing atmosphere. There is no doubt that a well planned and maintained garden will transform a space into the most attractive feature of your home.
A garden on the verandah is planned just like any other garden. First of all if the background wall of the verandah is attractive have a landscape to enhance the beauty of the wall or if you are not happy with the wall, plan a landscape which will hide it and create an alternate background.
Remember that a roofed verandah can have a large effect on the plants you grow. It will protect the garden from harsh weather conditions like too much sunlight, strong winds and heavy rainfall. It is preferable to use roofing which will allow partial light as well as keep the rain out.
An unattractive balustrade can be hidden by potted plants while you can plant bulbs in boxes or small hedges to create a barrier from the edges without a railing. You can even hang baskets on eaves or outside the balustrades. Verandahs are often are open not only to the natural elements such as very hot days, strong winds they also are sometimes provided by shade by the large trees growing adjacent to the verandah.
These trees or any other building may cause advantage and disadvantage to the plants in the garden. However there are a variety of hardy plants which grow in harsh conditions. Always remember that due to excessive heat or exposure to winds, plants may dry out sooner and may need frequent watering. Before planting keep in mind the space needed for that particular plant and also the nutrients.
If necessary build a wind break to protect the plants from strong winds. Add potting mixes with peat moss etc which will help retain moisture for a longer period of time. Limited soil area, frequent watering may cause loss of nutrients sooner than plants grown in the ground directly. Therefore apply required amounts of nutrients at intervals to ensure that your plants are not stunted. Regularly replacing pots and pruning will help in containing the plants which grow vigorously.
Growing bonsai is one way of creating an impact of a much larger garden. When you grow plants in a container, it will not help you keep changing the landscape. Let your imagination
