Worm farming

Worms can do wonders for the garden as they aerate the soil and their castings are an excellent fertilizer. A worm farm is to get a constant supply of this worm fertilizer as well as extra worms. Worm farms are simple structures that any one can make. The worms live in the bins, containers and simply wriggle their way up from the lower part of the bin to the above bin.

Hints for happy worms

Worms usually live underground so they thrive in an environment that is cool, dark and moist. To keep the worm farm dark newspaper or a Hessian can be used. Worms like moisture and should not be allowed to dry out. A light spray of fresh water when the worm farm is first constructed will generally provide sufficient moisture for the farm. Worms are voracious eaters. Once the worms are settled in and start growing they may need a good supply of suitable food. Worms mostly like vegetables and fruits scraps, but as they do not have teeth, scraps should be cut into small pieces. The food for the worms include potato peelings, apple cores, pea pods, shredded paper, eggshells, celery tops, bean strings, fruit and vegetable medley etc.

Homemade worm farm

Following is the way one can make his own worm farm. Things required for a worm farm:

1) Old carpet or a sack

2) Three telephone books or some bricks

3) One piece of corrugated iron

4) 3 or 4 tyres of similar size

5) Few newspapers

6) One small container

7) Lots of worms

8) One lid for the closing( can be a piece of wood or a stone)

9) Operating instructions for a worm farm are as follows:

10) Place the iron piece on the top of the telephone book, two books on the one side and other one on the other side to make a slope.

11) Stack the tyres on the top of the iron. Dig out a hollow for the container to collect the worm tea which runs off the iron.

12) Fill the bottom tyre with bedding material and add the worms.

13) Keep the worms covered with the newspaper, cardboard or the carpet, and then place the lid on top to prevent files getting in.

14) As the tyre stack fills up, this normally takes several months. Slide out the bottom tyre and empty it of worm casting.

15) Stuff it with fresh, moist newspaper and place on top of the tyre stack.
