What are worms?

A worm is an elongated invertebrate soft bodied animal. The most known of worms are earthworm. There are different categories of worms which include Acanthocephalan, Annelida, Gnathostomilida, Chaetognatha, Nemertea, Nematomorpha, Platyhellminthes, Sipuncula and Onychophora. Some of the insects such as larvae are also called as worms. This larvae insect may be a railroad worm, woodworm, glowworm or the bloodworms. Roundworms and tapeworms are known as parasitic worms. Every worm species differs in its abilities to move around.

What is worm farming?

Worm farming is one of the great ways to compost food scraps.. Adding worm casts or worm tea to the soil promotes soil fertility, moisture retention and encourages plant growth. Worm composting is easy and fun as it can be done indoors as well as outdoors. There are some things needed to set up a worm farm and they include a container, bedding material and suitable food and worms.

Building a successful worm farming

To build a worm breeding farm first thing needed is worms and then composting containers to keep these worms. The size of the container should be proportional to the amount of waste food. This container can be of one square foot per pound of the food waste. Then with some leaves, newspaper and card board is required to make bedding about the thickness of the hand length in the container. Soak the bedding before it is added to the container. Later add two handfuls of red worms or tiger worms to the top of the farm.

Kitchen waste can be used for laying it on the top of the bedding but in small amounts. One thing to be considered is not to feed worm with meat, bones, fatty food or dairy products. Even fruits like oranges, grapes and lemons should be avoided and also garlic or raw potato must not be feeded to the worms. Covering the food waste with a newspaper can keep a constant temperature in the worm farm. The worm farm must be placed in a shady spot in a garden or a garage. Then comes harvesting the worm casting, this can be done by moving all the worms to one side of the container and adding a fresh bedding to the empty side. With these steps one can build a successful worm farming of his choice.
