Red Worms, also called as Red wiggler worms, are excellent worms for composting. They are the nature's best selection for recycling. They can eat almost all living and died things. So, the proper method to breed them is of utmost importance.

Preparation of food

The first step towards red worm breeding is to prepare the breeding place. The person, who does not have any experience regarding this field, must start by procuring some dry leaves from a non resinous tree. These must be placed in a recipient. It must be completely filled with water. The leaves should get the maximum level of humidity. After the leaves are soaked in the water for 24 hours, they should be thrown in a humid corner on the ground. Alternatively, they may be placed in a container that does not collect water but preserves the humidity. Wet paper may be added to this. If the humidity is taken care of to be retained upto 80%, then after some days the leaves become a proper food for the red worms. The dry leaves degrade fast. The paper can be devoured by the worms, although they are not degraded. These two materials are not in need of any special or complex treatment. They can be eaten by the red worms without any hindrance or repulsion.

Factors

Other recommended products are the domestic herbs like tea or the used tea. The really crucial factor is to maintain the humidity. The precaution to be taken is that the material does not contain a large quantity of water. The deluge can alarm the red worms and also kill them. The pH of the aliment is also very vital. Approximately, it may vary from 6.2 to 7.8. The value of 7 is ideal for red worms. The red worms perish in extreme alkaline or acidic conditions. If only leaves and paper is being used, there would not be any rejection pertaining to pH. For other aliments, care must be taken that the food undergoes the fermentation process before supplying it to the worms.

Test for the food

To check whether the food is proper for the red worms the following method is used – A small quantity of the aliment is taken in a small container. Some worms are placed over it. The container is exposed to solar light. In case the worms penetrate the food in a small time and do not move out of the container after some minutes, it can be concluded that the food is suitable for the red worms. However, when the worms do not enter the food and move away from the container, it may be deduced that the food is not only suitable but also may be fatal. For every new aliment, this test must be conducted.
