Earthworms are known as the farmer's best friend. That is because they create a tunnel through the soil. In one day, an earthworm produces worm casting equivalent to its own weight. Nightcrawlers are the rare species of the earthworms. They are one of the most high quality worms available today. They are usually costlier than the normal earthworms. The Nightcrawlers can survive under immense climatic conditions even below -4 degrees. They are also used as bait. They are the only worms that survive in salty water.

European Nightcrawler:

The European Nightcrawlers belong to the red worm family of earthworms. They were first found in Europe. The worms also had different names like Big Red, the Belgium Worm and the Carolina Crawler. The Nightcrawler is known as Eisenia Hortensis in the scientific terms. The Nightcrawlers usually grows up to four or five inches. The European Nightcrawlers are an excellent species of composting worms. They eat very less and breed a bit slower than the other earthworms. These Nightcrawlers are now days being breed heavily due to its demand in the market. These worms take a very long time to populate and hence cannot be breed at home very easily. These worms can only be breed under a proper climatic conditions and temperature.

Louisiana Swamp Nightcrawler:

These worms originated in the state of Louisiana. These worms are well known for being really great bait for catching catfish, large bream and mouth bass. They are the best selling bait in today's market. They are the best selling worms because it does not require refrigeration. They can stay out in the cold for as long as 30 minutes below 8 inches of ice. These worms are relatively cheaper than its brother worm. These worms do not produce much worm castings. Most of the farms breed these kinds of worms and sell it at a relatively very cheap price. The worms are one of the most extinct species found these days. The worms can be used only as bait and nothing more. The Louisiana Swamp Nightcrawler relatively consumes food on a lower basis.
