Old Rocking Chairs
Rocking chairs were available even in old and traditional days. Right from olden day people preferred rocking chairs so that people felt by moving to and fro would relieve of tensions and back pain. In olden days women who were engaged in farm work used cradles made out of cloth. The end of the cloth will be tied to a rope and it will hang from the branch of a tree.
Mothers used to put their babies to sleep by swinging the cradle to and fro and this is exactly the place from where rocking chair picked up its history. In olden day the seat of the rocking chair was connected to spring like thing to hold the seat in the upward direction. This unique piece of rocking chairs will be displayed in museums.
Rocker had a funny form in the beginning. It had a stationery base supported by a rocking seat. Varieties of mechanisms were involved in its functioning. Popular idea was that it had a pair of 3 in diameter springs coiled at either ends. These springs were attached with sides of the chair. This created only swinging motions and there was no effect of rocking motion. Then platform rocking came in to existence with the horizontal spring placed below the seat which could create motion.
Traditional and old rocking chairs were made up of wood. Teak wood was the material used and metal rocking chairs were totally absent. Traditional chairs also proved to be a relaxing one mostly it was used outside the house.
Chairs were carried outside traditionally and put under the shade of a tree. Evenings and nights were considered to be best time to relax. Cleaning and maintaining of rocking chairs is very easy and it could be done once a year. Soft sponge or brush will be helpful to clean.
Quality wood cleaner available from hardware shops could be used for cleansing purposes. Wipe on finish products can be applied naturally and this application is sure to enhance the beauty of the chair. Rocking chairs should be rinsed with clean water prior to the application of varnish or paint.
