Red Worms For Breeding

The scientific name of Red Worms is Eisenia fetida. Red worm is the most commonly found composting worm. Red worm usually grows to about two to three inches only. It is a productive breeder and actually composts organic materials in a very huge amount. Red worms are one of the most helpful creatures present on this planet. They guzzle the human waste matter and turn it into thick, nutrient rich compost that cause yields in ones backyard to flourish and indoor plants to grow in a healthy manner. The red worms are one of the most eco-friendly and low maintenance creatures. It is very necessary to implement the idea of composting.

About Red worms:

The common red worms are naturally found in the topsoil level. They usually feed on the decaying organic matter lying in the soil. The epigeic red worms do not build everlasting burrows but prefer the loose topsoil which is extremely rich in organic matter to the dense mineral soil surrounding. Naturally, these worms are found in the highest concentrations in the forest duff layer or in the naturally occurring bunch of leaves and organic remains of the soil. The preferred environment can be duplicated for these worm species with the help of bin culture. It is due to this reason that these epigeic worms are used only for vermicomposting and other vermiculture systems.

Reproduction:

The worms reproduce by interchanging sperms. The gained seed is stored in a pore on their skin surface that is just above the clitellum. After the interchange of the sperms, the worms move away from each other and eject their own ova in to a pore on their own skin surface near the pore where the sperm was earlier stored. A thick secretion of mucous takes place around the clitellum, which then becomes hard on the outside but manages to remain sticky beneath thus forming a band from which, the worm backs. When the worm backs, it draws the band over its head. While the band is passing over the pore which is holding sperm and ova, they are swiftly picked up and held on the sticky base. When the red worm has totally come out of the hardened mucous band, the both the ends close forming a cocoon along with the sperm and ova inside where actual fertilization takes place.
