Red worms and its importance

The worm that is best adapted for worm bins are called red worms. Red worm grows up to two to three inches long. It is a prolific breeder and will compost organic matter in huge amount. Red worms are really useful as they are compost machines. They eat all the waste and turn it into nutrient rich compost that will cause yields in gardens to increase. Red worms can consume 1/2 to 1 lb of organic matter per day. Red worms are bi-sexual having both male and female reproductive organs. Some red worms produce an egg capsule every seven to ten days. Egg capsules incubate in 14 to 21 days producing from 2 to 20 worms with an estimated average of 4. Red worms continue to grow after reaching the breeding stage for 6 months before they are fully grown. Red worms have a life span of several years with some estimates of more than five years.

How Red Worm composting can be helpful

Composting red worms can save lots of time when more worms are added to the existing compost pile. Once the pile is well established there has to be a constant supply of worms while turning the compost, which can save at least some time to finish compost. Composting can save money as worms transform organic matter into free organic fertilizer. When rabbits, sheep and horses are being raised, it needs lots of manure to deal with. Instead of shoveling it over the back fence let composting worms recycle those piles into an organic product that can be used. Left over food that usually goes down the garbage disposal can also be a potential food for the red worms.

Red Worms good for bait fishing

Red Worms are great for pan fish such as perch or bream. There are no artificial lures that match a good red worm for bait fishing. Worm castings are rich soil amendments containing nutrients in a form usable to plants. Red worms are great fish bait because the stay alive for as long as 45 minutes in water and have a tough skin that keeps them on the hook, making it easier to hook a fish.
