A Verandah in simple words is an open roofed porch or gallery built around a building in the centre. A Verandah as per the Oxford English Dictionary is a word that originated in India and refers to the railings, balustrade or balconies. From time immemorial, India has faced invasion by foreign forces like the Muslims, Dutch, Portuguese and the English and has adopted the different architectural traditions brought by these invading forces.

These traditions have been incorporated in Indian architecture, which eventually developed as a fusion of the east and the west culture. A verandah is a large balcony built on the ground floor. It is commonly called a barandah in Hindi and Bengali, two native Indian languages.

There is another surprising meaning in the Oxford English Dictionary, which means, Verandah is a covering built at the side of the building, particularly one built over the street outside the trading site found particularly in Australia and New Zealand.

A roof can be defined as that structure which is movable or immoveable, that does not allow or intentionally prevents the free upward airflow, including a ceiling. It can also be defined as the uppermost, protective covering of a building. It acts as a protection for the building itself, and the living or material content from the effects of weather. When there is a roof over an open courtyard and it is an addition to the building it is called a verandah.

The roofing of a verandah maybe such that it protects against sunlight but allows other elements in. Roofs can either be curved or sloped in structure. Roofs are laid on rafters and depending on the geographical condition of the place, the roofing material could vary.

Tiles, cement slabs, aluminum and steel sheets are some of the different roofing material used to make roofs for the verandah. Aluminum and steel roofs can be insulated with a panel that has a climate control facility. The insulation can be adjusted to be cooling in the summer or warm in the winter and thereby doing away with the problem of mildew and condensation. Semi transparent or transparent fiberglass sheets are also available which allows extra light into the verandah.
