Seasonal Crop Growing
Seasonal vegetables like potatoes, peas, carrots etc can be grown in vegetable garden. Some careful precautions will allow you to take early harvest before the season. You can grow tomatoes and cucumbers in poly tunnel and thus they can yield early production. Seasonal vegetable crops can be grown easily in vegetable boxes that occupy less space. There are two types of vegetable box. They are small box and large box./ The small box can be used to grow 8 or more vegetable varieties and the large box can be used to grow even more.
Normally you can not grow tomatoes in winter and pumpkin and sprout in summer. But the vegetable box helps you to get produce in all seasons. As they protect the crops from seasonal changes you can grow them easily in all seasons. Yet there are some vegetable crops that can be grown only in particular season.
Some tips for growing seasonal vegetables:
You can grow seasonal vegetable crops in rotation basis. Plant them in row of north and south direction so that they can get sufficient sunlight. Also ensure that every crop has got adequate water. Over watering or lack of water will damage the crop. If you want to give protection from wind to your seasonal crops then plant them in east and west direction.
Plant two or more varieties of crops that have different maturity season so that you can get vegetables through out the year. You can use water soluble fertilizers initially. You can add manure and leave the soil for some days before you plant the next seasonal crop. Over fertilization can damage the crops. Water the plants uniformly and gently using a sprinkler.
Growing tomatoes in vegetable garden:
Your vegetable garden will not be completed unless you grow tomatoes. You can start growing them in early summer when the soil is slightly warm and can harvest within 3 months. You should water them adequately. You can use mulching paper to prevent the plant from pests and diseases.
Growing cucumber:
Cucumber is reluctant to frost and so plant them when the soil is warm. The soil should be fertile, well drained and have the pH value of 6. Cucumber will start to yield produce within 60 to 65 days. You should take harvest before winter or rainy season.
