Worms

A worm is a long, thin animal that lives under the surface of soil. They have a soft and long rounded body without any legs or backbone. There are thousands of various kinds of worms in this world. The largest species measure many feet or meters long, while the smallest worm cannot be seen without a microscope. Worms usually live in the soil, but there are some worms which line in the water as well. Many worms eat plants and animals, but some feed on decaying matter or scraps. There are some more worms which live as parasites in various animals and plants causing certain diseases.

Tips for Worm Growing

To grow red worms successfully there is a certain process that one has to understand before growing worms. In order to sell breeders or bed run it is important to separate the worms from all the other worms in the bed. To accomplish this task a harvester is required. Harvester is an oblong wire basket that rotates in a circle by hand or electric. The loading end is angled slightly higher than the output end, so the worms will roll out. The screen size used depends on the size of worms required, usually 1/2 "screen is used for breeders only and 1/4" screen is used for bed run. The screen size determines the degree of separation and the number of times harvested. Usually harvesting is done one or two times but some harvest for more accurate, cleaner worm weight. The main purpose of harvesting is to separate the desired size of worms form the rest but also includes removing of eggs, bedding, debris etc.

When breeding is being done, be sure to introduce new types of food to the worms. It is also important to change the bedding frequently as it smells and attracts insects. One more important aspect to remember while feeding is that, always feed on the top only and in rows down the center of the bed leaving few inches on either side for the worms to back off. Worms are very easy keepers so it is important to look in on them at least once every other day to ensure proper food and water is available.
