Vermicomposting is a method to produce some of the best fertilizers on earth by recycling the organic wastes. Vermicomposting can be a fruitful business. Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, natural fertilizer and also act as a soil conditioner. It is prepared in specific bins depending on the desired size of the system. Vermicompost bins are largely classified into small scale and large scale. The bins should have holes in the sides to allow air flow.

Small Scale Bins:

Vermicompost bins are generally made of old plastic containers, wood, Styrofoam containers or metal containers. Styrofoam bins are special kind of bins which releases toxins into the earthworm's environment. Metal containers are usually not used since they are prone to rusting and conduct heat readily. Rusting of container may release heavy metals into compost. A plastic bin requires more drainage as they are non-absorbent. Small scale bins are grouped in three categories:

Non-continuous: It is an undivided container consisting of three layers. First layer contains the bedding material which is lined up at the bottom. Second layer comprises of worms and organic matter. Another layer is added over the organic matter where the worms start composting the organic matter and bedding. Harvesting such bins is difficult since the worms and all the materials have to be emptied after the process.

Continuous vertical flow: It is a kind of bin where series of trays are placed in a vertical fashion. The bottom-most tray is filled first and the other trays are prepared in a similar way which are placed one above another. Worms starts composting the bottom-most tray and keeps migrating to the upper trays. Once the composting is over, the trays are collected. These bins are relatively easy to harvest.

Continuous horizontal flow: These types of bins are very much similar to continuous vertical flow. The only difference being that these trays are prepared in a horizontal fashion and the worms starts migrating towards the food in horizontal way.

Large Scale Bins:

A large scale vermiculture system usually uses a windrow. Windrow consists of bedding materials for the worms to live in. It is used on a concrete surface so as to prevent predators from killing the worm population. They do not have any physical barriers for worms since the organic matters are constantly added to the other side after the process of harvesting.
