Overview

A worm farm follows the technique of worm composting. It is the process of fermentation or organic breakdown of certain species of earthworms. The end-product thus obtained is called vermicompost and it finds its usage as a nutritious natural fertilizer and soil fertilizer. The earthworms used for this purpose are brandling worms. Since these varieties are adapted to the anaerobic conditions, they find immense usage in rotting vegetation and compost. Other organisms other than worms are insects, molds and bacteria although earthworm serves as the catalyst for rotting process.

The various points need to be borne in mind for the purpose of worm breeding. The foremost necessity is the location. The position of the worm breeding farm must be in absolute shade. Also, it must be away from the direct impact of rains. The next phase is the setting up of the farm. The coir brick must be well squeezed out for the actual installation. The drainage also must be properly ensured to facilitate adequate conditions for the rotting process. The next factor is the proper covering to be incorporated over the container of the worms. The moisture content and the proper aeration must be also be considered. Another important factor is the feeding of the worms. In order to match the consumption and the application rate, optimum amounts of worms need to put in the container from time to time. Another factor to be noted is the amount of moisture in the breeding farm enclosure. The worm bed must be kept adequately wet but not water-logged with standing water. In addition, lime must be added to manage the acidity of the worm bed. Apart from these instructions, an optimum timing of addition of fresh worms to the container bears best results.

Benefits of Worm breeding

The process of worm breeding has many positive effects on the health of soil. The end product improves the physical structure of soil. Also, the biological properties of the soil are enriched due to this methodology. It also finds its usage in making of the compost tea. The vermicompost when fed to the poultry helps improve their immunity. However, worm compost is not suitable as a seed starter. Although it finds usage in additives to potting mixes, yet its overdose can alter the PH value of the soil.
