Worm Breeding In Your Garden
Earthworms are the hungriest patrons of organic resources and leave behind nutrient loaded compost known as castings. The worms, work their way tilling the soil, cycling nutrients between the soil surfaces and going more than six feet below the ground making the soil evenly nutritional. Due to the castings being neutral in pH, hale and hearty earthworm populations can help a lot to ease problems between high and low pH. A large quantity of the organic waste generated through out the world ends up choking all the landfills, producing extremely unhealthy greenhouse gases as it decomposes, and thus develops grave disposal problems for the local communities residing.
Worms in garden:
The earthworms, produce up to half of their body's weight everyday in a casting that is nutrition rich. They also improve the soil quality by creating channels for aerating the soil. They also improve the soil by making a good drainage system in it. The earthworms are slimy creatures that make the soil rich nitrogen by their secretions. They greatly help in binding the soil particles together thus increasing the moisture retention system. It is easily understood a soil that is a host to a promising earthworm is likely to be nutrient rich, highly friable and thus, makes the garden a better place for plantation. It is extremely necessary for the earthworms to avoid use of harmful chemicals, extreme rototilling or spading. The use of digging fork should be implemented that leaves the worms without any harm. All these things can help in growing the earthworm population.
Things required for the earthworm population to grow:
For the earthworms to live and grow it is very necessary that they get a good supply of organic matter, oxygen and proportionate supply of moisture. Other organic materials like added compost, well rotted manure, and thick mulches of shredded leaves or even grass clippings will encourage worm activity to a very good extent. Providing the earthworms with a good habitat and food will encourage the earthworm population a lot. For harshly used up soil or a soil that has been treated with a high level of fertilizers and pesticides, it make take long time to build a healthy population.
